This investigation is based on information that the
Black Guerrilla Family's activities may be in violation of
Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 2383 (Rebellion or Insurrection)
and Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 2384 (Seditious Conspiracy).
A confidential source, who, has furnished reliable information
in the past has informed that the organization uses force and
violence in connection with racial problems, advocates violent
attacks and disruptive activities against California Department
of Corrections Authority, and engages in rebellion, insurrection
and destruction at San Quentin Prison.
On December 20, 1973, and January 14, 1974, a reliable
source furnished the following:
California Penal Institutions are violently experiencing
the powers of criminally oriented groups now operating both
within and outside the Correctional System. Individuals have
grouped themselves into organizations that reflect the ethnic
background and language and are directed at prisoner self-protection
and control of illegal activities within prison walls and on the
streets. These formal tight-knit organizations are composed
on convicts and ex-convicts and are known to be involved in
narcotics, extortion, contract killing, robbery, forgery and
receiving.
To be effective at self-protection, these groups
must acquire positions of power within the prison system.
Prison killings, control of narcotic traffic within the system,
crimes committed by members on the outside and the building of
a strong organization on the street enables these groups to
maintain a powerful position within^: the penal institutions.
The Black Guerrilla Family (BGF) is only one of the
many prison groups that are violently demonstrating their powers
both within the penal institutions and on the streets. It
appears that their influence over numerous criminal areas will
pose a major problem in the future to both the prison
correctional officer and the on the street law enforcement

officer. As the balance of power shifts in the varous institutions
due to transfers, new arrivals and deaths, violence of various
degrees can be expected to continue.
The BGF is formed from members of the Black Panther
Party, the Black Muslems and the Republic of New Africa within
the California Department of Corrections who thought that their
groups were moving too slow. They 1 formed the BGF to identify with.
The BGF is anti-white and considers the courts,
administration and the California Department of Corrections
as its enemies. There is some evidence to show that the group
exists in and out of prison. The group has established a code,
an oath that is administered when admitted to the BGF and an
alliance with the New Family (a Mexican- American revolutionary
group in the California Department of Corrections) in the
warfare existing between the New Family and the Mexican
Mafia (a Mexican- American revolutionary group in the California
Department of Corrections) allied with the Aryan Brotherhood
(an anti-Black group in the California Department of Corrections,
who support white supremacy).
Inmates, mostly recruited by pressure into the BGF who
have committed themselves to the BGF find that they cannot leave
it. There have been several stabbings of Negroes who have
tried to leave the BGF of were felt to be a threat to it. .
Death is the only termination of membership in the BGF. Persons
who turn against the New Family or the FBG are considered as
enemies and are marked for attack and death whenever possible.
From a review of the inmates in control and the leader-
ship of the BGF, it readlily becomes apparent that leaders have
attained their rank, due to their bloody backgrounds and history
of violence.
The BGF is known to be in existence at Duell Vocational
Institute at Tracy, California, Training Facility at Soledad and
San Quentin State Prison at Tamal, California.
Members of the BGF are hostile toward staff and tend
td act out through aggressive behavior. Several staff members
have been informed that they are in the way of the BGF.
The membership of the BGF has been reported but not
verified to be approximately 1,000 in the prison system. At

groups and discussing their activities within the state's
penal institutions with the officials at California State
Department of , Corrections, Sacramento suggests that they
not be worked as Extremist Matter (EM) cases but as Ant i -
Racketeer ing (AR) matters.

Department of Corrections, Sacramento, advised on 1/23/74,
that the above groups were definitely criminally oriented
and that their activities involved narcotics, extortion
and prison killings. He also advised that 'these groups
evolved along ethnic lines, mainly to protect themselves
from each other and other groups as well.

under the EM character but under an AR character.

there are four active organizations within California
prisons; namely, the Aryan Brotherhood, the Black Fami

The above source's have advised that all of
those organizations are criminally oriented and are not
extremist or revolutionary in nature. The sources
advised that these groups have evolved over recent years
due to racial conflicts •wi thin the prison. The white
prisoners, in order to protect themselves against harass-
ment by black prisoners, formed the Aryan Brotherhood, and
since its inception, it has become a definitely criminally
oriented organisation. That is, one which is aimed at
extortion, robbery, and other criminal means to control
conditions -within the prison. The above source further advis<
that the black prisoners joined together in an organization
called the Black Family to protect themselves not only against
white harassment but against harassment by Mexican-American
prisoners. This group is also criminally oriented and is not
political or r evolu ti onary in nature.

formed into two groups, the' Mexican Mafia and the Hew Family, ^
Both of these groups' are also criminally oriented and are not
political or revolutionary in nature. All of the above. groups
are known to have advocated some violence within the prisons.,
but this violence is not political or revolutionary but the
normal violent type reaction caused by discontented prisoners.
It should be noted that Los Angeles presently has
anti-racketeering cases open on the New Family, Los Angeles
file 92-51x65, and' on the Mexican Mafia, Los Angeles file
92-5422.
It is recommended that no extremist investigation ,
be conducted of any of the above organizations and that any.
investigation by the Bureau be conducted under the 92 classi-^
fication. ' v

This investigation is based on information that
the Black Guerrilla Family's (BGF) activities may be in
violation of Title 18, U. S. Code, Section 2383 (Rebellion
or Insurrection) and Title 18, U. S* Code, Section 2384
(Seditious Conspiracy). A review of "The Oath" of the
BGF reflects that they believe in using force and violence
to perpetrate the revolutionary goals of their organization
and that there is "no cure for the evils of the western world
other than through UNCOMPROMISING DESTRUCTION".
On October 15, 1973,

reliable information in the past, advised as follows:
The BGF is a splinter group formed from the
Black Panther Party (BPP), and leaders of the BGF are former
followers of Huey Newton and Eldridge Cleaver. The BGF is
an anti -white group and considers whites and the adminis-
tration (police and courts) as their enemies.
The BPP is a black extremist organization started
in Oakland, California, in December, 1966. It formerly
advocated the use of guns and guerrilla tactics to bring about
the overthrow of the. United States Government. Since early
1971 9 it has preached a policy of "survival pending
revolution" •

The BGF exists in and out of the prisons.
Past members who have attempted to leave "The Family"
have been subject to attempts on their lives.
Leaders of captioned organization appear to
have attained their positions due to their bloody
backgrounds, and the more anti-society oriented they are,
the higher their leadership position.
The BGF at present seems to only be in power
at the Deuel Vocational Institution (DVI) , Tracy, California,
and Soledad Prisons; however, it is in the process of
extending itself to other California prisons.

30. Examples of planned BGF activity earn that if a police
officer in Los Angeles or San Francisco is involved in a
justifiable homicide and/or altercation where a black is
injured, a son of a family previously profiled by the
BGF might receive similar treatment, and the BGF would
claim credit. A BGF member indicated that they have two
unidentified individuals "lined up!’ one in California and
one in the East. Los Angeles, Sacramento end San Francisco
ere being furnished instructions to intensify investigation
of this group. Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San, Francisco
are advising appropriate prison officials concerning

All San Francisco agents handling extremist matters
have been advised of the situation with regards to the Black
Guerrilla Family (BGF) and other prison extremist groups and
their propensities for violence. Information has been
disseminated in this regard with respect to existing Bureau
instructions as to the handling of such matters and the
necessity of developing information regarding such activities
and of the continuing need for sources in this regard. This
matter has been regularly stressed in squad and all agent
conferences .
In regard to referenced Los Angeles airtel

of all agent personnel to enable intelligence source
contacts .
Every effort is being made on a continuing basis
to develop logical sources with respect to the BGF and all
extremist groups functioning within this division.

BLACK GUERRILLA FAMILY (BGF)
This investigation is based on information that
the Black Guerrilla Family’s (BGF) activities may be in
violation of Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 2383 (Rebellion
or Insurrection) and Title 18, U.S. Code, ?!?h" 0 of 2 the BGF
(Seditious Conspiracy) . A review of The Oath of the BGF
reflects that they believe in using force and violence
to perpetrate the revolutionary goals of their organization

other than through UNCOMPROMISING DESTRUCTION .
The BGF is a splinter group formed from the Black
Panther Party (BPP) , and leaders of the BGF are former
followers of Huey Newton and Eldridge Cleaver. The BGF is
an anti-white group and considers whites and the administration
(police and courts) as their enemies.

incidents of violence involving the BGF occurring in San

The BGF was not operating under any other names,
has not been using black culture groups as fronts, and other
blacks are avoiding the BGF because of their violence.
BGF members read all they can and follow the
writings of George Jackson since he was the founder of the
BGF.
If a member receives his rank by a general he
retains it from one institution to another, and that the BGF
v is heavy at DVI, San Quentin Prison, California Training
Facility, Soledad and Folsom State Prisons.
The Commander and the Field Captain retain all
records of an institution in their heads, no written records
are kept.
A "hit” will be assigned to a squad leader by
the Commander or Field Commander. Squad leader will assure
that BGF other than his squad are off the yard. Members of
the squad will screen action from staff by forming a human
screen. Only the people making the "hit", the squad leader
and the person that ordered the hit know who is going to do b7C
it and who will be the victim.
There is no neutral ground, if the BGF wants a man,
they will take him wherever they find him, including in the
visiting room.
BLACK GUERRILLA FAMILY
California Department of Corrections staff do not
want this. Relatives of BGF members are being led along
for their sympathy.
George Jackson set up the working agreement between
the BGF and the New Family, advising both to disregard all
Mexican Mafia and not to trust them.

Generals have a big voice in an institution, having
the power to override commanders. A general's orders must
be carried out.
Generals are decided by time, history of violence,
and willingness to act.
I noted much of the information furnished by
I might well be self-serving in nature yet essentially
■portrayed the BGF as it existed.
This source said there is a relationship between
the BGF and the New Family which has resulted in a considerable
amount of violence within the California Penal System
involving individuals affiliated with functioning extremist
groups in the institutions. The conflicts that have arisen
are primarily between members of the BGF allied with the
Mexican-American revolutionary group the New Family in warfare
against the Mexican Mafia, a Mexican-American revolutionary
group, who are allied with the Aryan Brotherhood, an anti-
black group who support white supremacy.
Sources familiar with extremist activities in the
San Francisco Division know of no outside groups functioning
as BGF, however, numerous conflicts, based on activities with
extremist groups and/or unaffiliated extremists prior to
their incarceration have continued to receive support from
such groups and/or individuals while confined, and have also
received support from groups and individuals espousing penal
reform.

CLEAVER FACTION (BPP-CF)
The Black Panther Party - Cleaver Faction (BPP-CF)
based in New York, New York, follows the violent revolutionary N
philosophy of its leader, Eldridge Cleaver, calling for the
overthrow of the United States Government by creating a climate
of terror accomplished by using urban guerrilla tactics.
Bernice Jones, leader of the BPP-CF in New York City, in
describing the purpose of the organization, stated "We are
a revolutionary organization whose sole function is to wage
revolution in America . "

1 BLACK PANTHER PARTY
The Black Panther Party (BPP) , organized in December,
1966, at Oakland, California, by Huey P. Newton and Bobby George
Seale, has the publicly stated purpose of organizing black
people to take control of the life, politics and destiny of .<
the black community. The Party, operating the Black Panther
IntercoTimunal News Service, publishes a newspaper called,
"The Black Panther", which at one time openly advocated the
use of guns and guerrilla tactics in a revolutionary program
to end the oppression of the black people but since early 1971
has spoken for a survival program pending revolution.
While openly advocating direct overthrow of the IT. S.
Government by force and violence until 1971, leaders have since
avoided extreme statements in favor of calling for action within
the established order. Newton, in an interview appearing in the
May, 1973 issue of "Playboy" magazine, stated the Panthers' chief
ambition ..is to change the American Government by any means
necessary but that ultimately such change will be through armed
violence.

NATION OF ISLAM (NOI)
The Nation of Islam (NOI) is a black nationwide
organization headquartered at Muhammad* s Temple #2, 7351
South Stony Island Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, under the
guidance of Elijah Muhammad, self-styled "Messenger of
Allah," and alleged divinely appointed leader of the
black race in America, The NOI seeks a separate black
nation, considers all whites to be "devils," and preaches
a distorted version of the traditional Islamic religion,
NOI internal dissidence and difficulties with rival Muslim
groups, and other adversaries, have produced considerable
violence in recent years, NOI official policy instructs
members to obey United States laws that do not conflict
with NOI laws; to defend NOI officials, property, women,
and themselves at all costs, if attacked; and to disarm
any. attacker and use the attacker’s weapon against him,
Male NOI members regularly receive judo and karate training
NOI activity is widespread among black inmates in many
prisons in the United States,

The Black Liberation Army (BLA) is a loose-knit
urban guerrilla organization whose self-described purpose
is to overthrow the Government. In announcing the BLA's
purpose, it stated "The purpose of the BLA is the same as
that of the Tupamaros in Uruguay, Frelimo in Mozambique, and
all the other liberation forces. The BLA is simply brothers
and sisters who have gone underground to put all the revolu-
tionary rhetoric and theory into practice."

The past several years has witnessed an increasing
number of acts of violence within the California prison
system. Many of these acts have been perpetrated by members
Of various groups formed within the prisons, xhe foremost of
tt-ese croups has been the Black Guerrilla Family (SGj;),
sol inter group of tie Black Panther Party. As has been
indicated in your recent communications, more and more members
of the 3GF are being released from prison and there is
evidence that these releasees are being given assignments by the
3GF to carry out vlen they return to outside life.
Our responsibilities for investigations of this group
and its members have been limited while its activities were
confined to the prisons. As more members are released, the
group poses a graver thfeat to the national security, and xt is
incumbent upon us to be aware of any activity by the group out-
side the prisons. In order to accomplish this, it is necessary
to fully identify all members, be notified of their release and
to insure that thereafter all revolutionary and extremist

The March 26, 1975* morning final edition of the
Los Angeles Times newspaper, Los Angeles, California, Part
One, Page 26, carried an article by Times staff writer
Philip Hager captioned, "Selection of Jurors Gets Underway
in Murder Trial of ’San Quentin Six’". This article stated
the Six are accused of murder and conspiracy in the bloody
August 21, 1971, San Quentin Prison escape attempt that took the
lives of three guards and three inmates, one of them prison
revolutionary George Jackson.
The newspaper article named the -San Quentin Six
defendants as , Luis Talamantez age 32, Hugo Pinell age 31,
Fleeta Drumgo age 29, David Johnson age 28, and John Larry
Spain age 25. The sixth, Willie Tate age 3& is free on
$100,000.00 bail.
On Saturday, February 8, 1975* the Black Panther
Intercommunal News Service (newspaper), Oakland, California,
began a series of articles concerning the San Quentin Six,
and in particular John Larry Spain. The article dated
Saturday, February 8, 1975* appearing in volume 12, number
29, identified John Larry Spain as Johnny Spain, a Black
Panther Party (BPP), (see Appendix) member. Subsequent
articles appeared Saturday, March o, 1975* volume 13, number
3, and Saturday, March 29, 1975* volume. 13, number 6, featuring
Johnny Spain and described him as BPP prison activist, and
described deceased George Jackson as a former BPP Field
Marshal. These articles were concerned principally .with
John Larry Spain's medical condition and what .type of facility
he should be held in pending and during trial.

BLACK GUERRILLA FAMILY
The characterization of the Black
Guerrilla Family (BGF) can be found
v, in the Appendix.
A source advised between the period December 4, 1974
and March 26, 1975, there were approximately eight incidents
of violence that took place at San Quentin Prison involving
members of the BGF. The following are the incidents and in-
dividuals involved: a

prisons and allied with the Aryan
Brotherhood .

On December 18, 1974 ^ | advised that San
Quentin Prison has been separating the more vocal members and
known leaders of the Mexican Mafia, Aryan Brotherhood, and
BGF from the general population at the prison in an attempt
to contol the violence. In 1974, there were 90 assaults,
including 12 deaths. The majority of the assaults are blamed
on gang warfare. The segregated convicts are being placed in a
controlled unit in D Section of the prison. The gang members
which have been segregated have either been identified by
themselves or prison officials as belonging to the respective
groups .
On January 15, 19 75 ,| advised that the
inmates who have been locked down at the prison have been
placed in Category IV, which is considered "the most violent
convicts in the California Department of Corrections," These
inmates will be completely segregated from other convicts,
having no contact or communication with the general population.
These inmates will have to prove themselves as being non-
violent and not a threat to violence before they will be
downgraded to Category III, which would include remaining
isolated in their cells except for exercise and meals.

• . The Black Guerrilla Family (BGF) is a splinter
group formed from the Black Panther Party (Bnp) and leaders
of the BGF are former followers of Fuey Newton and Eldridge
Cleaver. The BGF is an anti-white group and considers
vrhites and the administration (police and courts) as their
enemies .

PURPOSE ;
This is to advise of growth of black revolutionary
group in California prison system and to receive approval for
submission of attached airtel to California offices to
intensify investigation of captioned group and its members.
DETAILS :
During the past several years acts of violence
within California prisons haxfe increased greatly. Much of this^
violence has been perpetrated by one group against another /
but it has also been directed against prison staff personnel^
Although these groups were originally crime-oriented, outside
revolutionaries have now greatly influenced them. From
such beginnings we have witnessed the growth of the
Symbionese Liberation Army, and its activities have shocked
the nation. y /

The Black Guerrilla raifu^Ly CBGF) has now emerged
as the most violent and revolutionary group within the
California prison system. It is a splinter group of the
violence-prone Black Panther Party (BPP) , and its leaders
are former followers of Huey Newton and Eldridge Cleaver,
fugitive leaders of the two factions of the BPP. BGF
believes in the use of force and violence to perpetrate its
revolutionary goals, which contend there is "no cure for the
evils of the Western World other than through uncompromising
destruction," Courts and the prison system are considered'
its enemies. BGF exists both in and out of prison ^fidnonce a

Re: Black Guerrilla Family
Over 1,000 members are estimated within the
California prison system and while many of them are lifers
and long- termers, some are being released each year. Those
released are expected to remain members and function in the
group’s behalf. Several splinter groups of the BGF have
surfaced and claimed credit for bombings and police attacks.
It has been reported that BGF was profiling 100 powerful
families in San Francisco and Los Angeles with sons and
daughters between 18 and 36 years old who could be used as
hostages against society.
OBSERVATIONS :
Our investigations to date have been limited to
identifying members and reporting of information from prison
sources. In view of the violent nature of the organization
and the allegation of hostage situations, full investigations
of all individuals identified as members are justified and
necessary. It is essential that we are aware of revolutionary
and extremist activities of these individuals after they are
released from prison.
It is impossible to ascertain the numbers of cases
that will be opened. Under present instructions to the field,
most of our investigations are operated out of the organizational
file. Under instructions set out in attached airtel,
individual cases will be opened on each’ member as he is
released . A large number should not be involved , as many
members are lifers and long -termers. ,
ACTION :
It is recommended that the attached airtel be
approved and sent to the field* Statutory predications will
be prepared and submitted to the field.

was a "cell" or sub-group
within the BGF, as such they assumed different names.
Originally they called themselves the August 7th Movement
or August 7th Guerrilla Movement, but that name was
phased out. They have also used the name "The Baby
Guerrilla Squad" in honor of BGF founder and leader
George JacRson^s younger brother, Jonathan Jackson,
deceased* (*) <4
Jonathan Jackson died August 7, 1970,
in the .Marin County shoot out when he.
brought weapons into a court room hearing
and tried to assist several black prisoners
to escape by taking the Judge, the
prosecutor, and jurors as hostages.
George Jackson, deceased, war- killed in
the bloodiest escape attempted in the
history of San Quentin Prison on August
21, 1971. Six persons, three guards and

jurisdiction of the California Department of Corrections,
and for a number of years was incarcerated in the maximum
security section of San Quentin Prison, Tamal, California
The Black Panther Party (BPP) at that time was very '
active on the streets, outside the prisons and in the com-
munities. Be had never participated or associated with any
r.rp members. He began associating with extremists in prison.

can be used as a weapon. The skin search includes body cavities
The guards are supposedly under strict ins true tions never to
allow white prisoners and Blade prisoners into the .same areas
at the same time because of racial hatreds prevalent among
inmates. However, in 1969, a guard named 0. G. MILLER was
killed by inmates in the yard, and after the shooting by
the guards, three brothers (Negro inmates) were dead and ;
one white Nazi inmate was shot in the leg.
Before the incident, there was considerable rumor
which seemed to spread front the guards to the inmates that,
something was about to happen. There seemed to be excite-
ment among the guards as if the guards knew something was
going to happen. What did happen. was tnat Black and white
inmates were turned loose in the exercise yard at the . same
time. Reportedly, a scuffle broke out between B.lack inmates,
including* JACK'; ON, DRUKGO and CLUTCBETTE and white Inmates,
and the guard was Killed wnxxe interceding in L'iik sLruggxo.
It was unpopular belief among Black inmates that the con- ^
frontat ion had been deliberately staged by guards, at^Soledad.
The killing of three brothers was declared .by authorities
to be justifiable homicide on the part of prison': guards.
Subsequent to that, "The Soledad Three" were accused m ohc
murder of a guard who was thrown over the rail from a top
cell tier. The word that passed among Black inmates was
fbpt the guard had been killed in retribution and as a
retaliatory, act to avenge the earlier shooting of the
three brothers..

were the principal acts of violence which occurred at Soledad
in 1969. Other violence involved Black inmates and other.
Black inmates who were members of the nation of Islam (KOI) .

Upon being released on the mainline at Folsc'm
Prison, he became active in -some Black Study groups that v/ere
formed. These groups were organized, in 1970. He was neyerr^
aware of who organized these groups.. The Blacks had a Black
History grout) and the Chicanos had their group. Inmates
would make reports. A Black guy came into the prison ^ and
ran the program under the title "Minority Consultant;.
In 1971 the Attica Prison uprising occurred and
the Blacks at Folsom Prison *we re accused of plotting to
overthrow the prison system. There was no plot and no such
overt plans. The Black inmates believed this was merely a
plot or ploy by the authorities to round up all the inmates
and throw them in the hole. Authorities stopped, the Black

The Black prison inmates known as the Black 'Guerrilla
Family (BGF) do not recognize or follow ELDRIDGE CLEAVER or
his philosophies identifiable with the Black Liberation ^
Army (BLA) .
The Black prison extremist or political groups are
not associated with the groups on the streets. The BGF is
not associated with the BLA on the streets. They are . .
separate and distinct entities and neither takes orders from
the other. ?
GEORGS JACKSON (deceased) of the "Soledad Three"
was the recognised leader among all Black prison extremist
inmates.

violent argument and split over charges of who was trying
to misuse the prisoners for their own purposes the most.
The attorneys always flocked in whai it was to
their advantage economically or publicity-wise . VJhcn the
money stopped f lowing their way, they would never respond
to any inmate plea for assistance. Curr en tly., , .National
Lawyers'. Guild attorneys are regarded ..by. prison . inmates as
mere opportunists, "and used by the inmates but not liked
or trusted^.
An officially recognized outside group which was
allowed to come, into the San Quentin Prison in an attempt
to assist inmates was the Self -Advancement Through Education
(SATE) group. That group had little impact on the general
prison population but members of the BGF were very active in
SATE. Another group was known as The Sisters of Motivation
and was comprised of Black girls from the Bay Area (Oakland,
California), who would come into San Quentin Prison to deal
with the brothers and relate with them and their problems.
They were non-ideological and non-extremist and their primary
purpose was to build, up morale and to ’write letters, if an
inmate writes a letter’ to The Sisters of Motivation, he will
get a reply letter but ho may not know the girl who is writing
it. No white girls were members of The Sisters of Motivation."
Anything you vaunt can be smuggled into the Calif orni.
Prison System. Prisoners have liquor, money , narcotics,
weapons, even guns. A prison is just a big city. The only

thing you don’t have in prison is a woman. Contraband is
smuggled in by attorneys, girlfriends, wives, relatives end
the guards themselves, who can be bought by the inmates.
On one occasion, knives were found in the sides of beef
shipped into the prison.

although it recognized GEORGE JACKSON as its leader, was Black

In the August 7, 1970 Karin Comity Courthouse shoot-
out, the Black inmates who were attempting to e scare were RUC11ELL
MAGEE, JAKES KC CLAIN and WILLIAM CHRISTMAS . They" and JONATHON
JACKSON were taking the judge and white hostages to hold as
ransom for the release of the "The Soledad Three," (GEORGE
JACKSON , FLEETA DRUMGO and JOHN WESLEY GLUTCK5TTE) . About a
year later, GEORGE JACKSON wp s killed in a San Quentin escape

attempt. FLEETA DRUMGO is still in prison. JOHN WESLEY
CLUTCHETTE was eventually paroled. Following the shootout,
ANGELA DAVIS, well known female Black activist, was charged
in the murders because some of the guns used by JONATHON _ _ ^
JACKSON were traced to ANGELA DAVIS as the purchaser. After
a trial, she was acquitted by the Jury.

BGP members accept as a fact that proceeds from the
books written by GEORGE JACKSON were going to IIUEY NEWTON for
the purpose of arranging the Marin County Courthouse escape
attempt in which GEORGE JACKSON' s brother, JONATHON- JACKSON?-
was killed, along with others. The van in which they attempt
their escape v&s supposed to have been armor-plated by HUEY
NEWTON, but it was not.
After the failure of that escape attempt, GEORGE
JACKSON wrote that no tears, should be shed for his baby
brother, JONATHON JACKSON. 'In honor of JONATHON JACKSON, the
Young Socialists took on the name "The Baby Guerrilla Squad,"
Since the death of GEORGE JACKSON, the BGF is no
longer' political. They are now t-otally disorganized and
just a group of Blacks waiting for a leader.
The BGF was not a large group and many son
inmates are erroneously lumped i.n as being members of the
BGF when they are not.
It would be correct to say, the only way to get
out of the BGF is to die.

of public attention, or become published authors of revolu-

intention of overthrowing the Government of the United Staten
by engaging in urban guerrilla warfare. ~ --
The immediate adversary of the "August Seventh
Movement " was any established authority.
The "August Seventh Movement" founded in prison,
and organized by and for the benefit of Black prison inmates,
failed in its organizational efforts, because the Central
Executive Committee was allowed to become too big and in-
sufficient emphasis and effort was placed into each member of
the Central Executive Committee recruiting its own followers.
New recruits became members of the Central Executive Committee
which grew too large for effective prison management. Every--
one wanted to be a leader of the Central Executive Committee
rather than a follower.
The "August Seventh Movement" , however, continues
in San Quentin Prison and is composed entirely of Black
inmates, and is a splinter group or faction of the over-

WEATHERMAN
The Y/eathcrman group, now commonly refcrrou to as
the Y/eather Underground , was formed in June, 1969, as a
faction of the Students for a Democratic Society. A Weatherman .
ideological paper entitled "You Don’t Keen n Weatherman to
Know Which Way the Wind Blows," prepared in June, 1969, stated
the basic philosophy of this group is Marxist-Leninist in contour
but with strong advocacy that action, not theory, would bring
about revolution in the United States. In mid-February, 1970,
members of the Weatherman entered an underground status -with
an intended program of "strategic, sabotage" with police and
military installations as primary targets.

number of Weatherman wanted for violations of Federal statutes
and local criminal violations. Since 1970, the Weather
Underground has claimed responsibility for a number of
bombings, .including the U. S. Capitol Building in march, 1971;
